The 2009 Ontario Provincial Championships returned to an old XCup stomping ground and Ottawa favourite, Nangor Resort.
Nangor is located on the Ottawa River just outside of Beachburg and is pretty much the hidden gem of contest sites in Ontario. The entire resort is lined with white sand beaches along a generally calm, protected shore, not to mention the ideal location to post in rails. I teamed up with title sponsor Slaysh Boardshop to organize the event, as well as Ride the Wake wakeboard school who took over for towboat. Props goes out to Liquid Force, Want, Hyperlite, Ronix, Sanuk, Reef and Coors Light for hooking all the riders up with some sweet prizing.
The contest was one of the few grassroots events this year in Ontario so the turnout was great. There were over 50 riders competing for the Newbie, Beginner, Intermediate and Pro Wakeboard titles as well as the Amateur and Pro Wakeskate categories.
The contest started out with the beginner riders all throwing down in the morning, and the intermediate guns following them up stomping inverts and spins all over the place. The Open categories were next, and let me tell ya, the level of riding in Ontario has sky rocketed over the past year. Pretty much everyone who made it to the pro mens final had at least one or two mobes, 5s in their runs and just destroying the rooftop rail. The toughest choice of the day was between Gavin Hicks and Dary Zneble, who both landed outstanding runs with grabbed tricks like indy glides, tootsies, whirlys, crow mobes, moby dicks, and huge 5s out into the flats. Props as well to Brady Hicks and Tommy Bailey who battled it out on the chop taking home Open men’s Wakeskate first and second. For the ladies, Ally Boothroyd took home both the Women’s Wakeskate title and Intermediate Wakeboard title, and me with Open Women’s Wakeboard followed by Leslie Sparkes killing it in second.
Big thanks goes out to Sara and Craig at Slaysh for hooking us up with awesome prizing and building a killer rail. Jordan and the Sien’s for their mad driving skills, and Barb for her usual outstanding hospitality. Also, props to Andy for finding his newfound calling as a wakeboard Emcee, and all the judges who baked away in the boat all day picking the top spots on the podium. Love you all!
